How Often Should You Groom Your Dog? The Complete Indian Guide

"How often does my dog need grooming?" is the question we get asked most at Ultimutt. And the honest answer is: it depends — on your breed, your dog's coat condition, the season, and whether your dog lives indoors or outdoors.

This guide gives you the definitive answer for Indian conditions specifically — because grooming frequency advice from American or European sources doesn't fully account for Indian summers, monsoon humidity, dust, and pollution.

The Short Answer by Breed Type

These are minimums. In India's climate, erring toward the shorter interval is almost always the right call.

Why Indian Conditions Demand More Frequent Grooming

Most grooming advice is written for temperate climates — UK, USA, Australia. India is different in ways that directly affect grooming needs.

Heat and humidity. Most of India experiences 8-10 months of significant heat. Dogs sweat through their paw pads but release heat through their coat — a dirty, matted coat traps heat rather than allowing it to dissipate. Regular grooming in India isn't a luxury during summer; it's temperature management.

Dust and pollution. Cities like Delhi, Gurgaon, Faridabad, and Mumbai have some of the highest particulate pollution levels in the world. This dust accumulates in your dog's coat between baths, causing skin irritation, dull fur, and itching. Dogs in these cities need bathing more frequently than the standard 6-8 week advice.

Monsoon. The humidity of June-September is a grooming challenge unique to India. Wet coats that don't dry properly — especially in double-coated breeds — become breeding grounds for fungal infections, hotspots, and odour. Professional grooming with a high-velocity dryer is especially important during and after monsoon.

Indoor air conditioning. Urban Indian dogs spend significant time in heavily air-conditioned spaces. AC reduces ambient humidity and can cause dry skin and a brittle coat over time. Dogs that live primarily in AC environments often show coat problems faster than outdoor dogs.

Breed-by-Breed Grooming Guide for India

Shih Tzu

Frequency: Every 2-3 weeks without exception.

The Shih Tzu is the most popular apartment breed in Delhi NCR — and the most high-maintenance from a grooming perspective. Their silky double coat grows continuously and mats extremely quickly, especially around the face, ears, armpits, and lower back.

Waiting beyond 6 weeks almost always results in matting that requires partial or complete shaving to fix. A Shih Tzu kept on a regular 4-5 week grooming schedule is dramatically easier to maintain than one groomed irregularly.

At-home brushing: Daily, with a slicker brush and metal comb.

Golden Retriever

Frequency: Every 2-3 weeks.

Goldens shed year-round and blow their coat heavily twice a year — typically April-May and October-November. During coat-blowing periods, professional de-shedding every 4 weeks is worthwhile. The rest of the year, 6-8 weeks is appropriate.

The most important service for Goldens is de-shedding, not a haircut. A proper professional de-shed removes 60-80% of the loose undercoat that ends up on your sofa, your clothes, and your food.

Never shave a Golden Retriever. This is a double-coated breed — shaving causes permanent coat damage.

At-home brushing: Every 2-3 days minimum, daily during shedding season.

Labrador Retriever

Labs are often thought to be low-maintenance because their short coat doesn't mat. This is partially true — they don't need haircuts. But they shed heavily, need regular nail trimming (their nails grow fast), and benefit from professional ear cleaning.

Labs are also prone to ear infections, especially in India's humid climate. Regular professional ear checks catch problems early.

At-home brushing: Weekly with a rubber curry brush.

German Shepherd

Frequency: Every 2-3 weeks, with additional de-shedding sessions during heavy shedding seasons.

GSDs have one of the densest double coats of any breed. In India's climate, this coat needs professional management to prevent overheating and skin problems. Never shave a German Shepherd — their coat regulates temperature in both directions.

At-home brushing: Every 2-3 days minimum.

Cocker Spaniel

Cocker Spaniels have beautiful feathered coats that require significant maintenance. More importantly, their floppy ears create a warm, moist environment that's prone to yeast and bacterial infections — especially in Indian humidity. Professional ear cleaning at every session is essential.

At-home brushing: Every 2-3 days, paying particular attention to the ear feathering.

Poodle (and Doodle mixes)

Poodle coats grow continuously and don't shed — they mat instead. This makes them both low-allergen and high-maintenance. Without regular professional grooming, a Poodle's coat can become completely matted within 2-3 months.

The good news: Poodles can be safely trimmed to any length, so summer management is easier than for double-coated breeds.

Beagle

Beagles have short, dense coats that don't require haircuts. Professional grooming focuses on bathing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. Like Cocker Spaniels, Beagles are prone to ear issues — their floppy ears trap moisture.

At-home brushing: Weekly.

Indie Dogs (Indian Pariah Dog)

India's native dogs are robust and relatively low-maintenance. However, Indie dogs that live indoors still benefit from regular professional bathing, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. Indoor Indies that were previously street dogs may have more significant initial grooming needs.

Seasonal Grooming Calendar for Delhi NCR

October-March (Winter):

Standard grooming frequency. Coats are generally in best condition. Good time to maintain regular schedules.

April-June (Pre-monsoon summer):

Increase frequency by 1-2 weeks for most breeds. De-shedding treatments are particularly valuable during April-May coat blowing season. This is when the "should I shave my dog" question peaks — the answer is still no for double-coated breeds.

July-September (Monsoon):

Most critical period. Dogs that go outdoors even briefly get wet repeatedly. Professional grooming every 4-5 weeks ensures coats are properly dried and cleaned. Watch for hotspots and fungal skin issues — these are most common during monsoon.

October (Post-monsoon):

Many dogs need an extra session immediately after monsoon season ends to address any coat and skin issues that developed during the humid months.

Signs Your Dog Needs Grooming Sooner Than Scheduled

Don't wait for the calendar if you notice:

  • Matting — anywhere in the coat, even small mats
  • Persistent smell between baths
  • Excessive scratching — may indicate dirty coat, skin irritation, or ear issues
  • Nails clicking on hard floors
  • Excessive shedding that seems beyond normal
  • Visible dirt in the coat that brushing doesn't remove
  • Head shaking or ear scratching — sign of ear wax buildup

The Cost of Skipping Grooming

Regular grooming prevents expensive problems:

  • Severe matting — requires sedation to remove in worst cases (vet cost: ₹3,000-8,000)
  • Ear infections — from neglected ear cleaning (vet cost: ₹1,500-4,000 per infection)
  • Skin infections from improperly dried coats (vet cost: ₹2,000-5,000)
  • Overgrown nails — can cause joint problems requiring long-term treatment
  • Hotspots — bacterial skin infections common in matted or dirty coats

A professional grooming session every 2-3 weeks at ₹999-1,199 is genuinely preventive healthcare. The alternative is reactive vet bills that are 3-5x the cost.
